From Lydia's Place website: "Lydia’s Place is Randolph County’s first emergency shelter for women and families experiencing homelessness, allowing children and their families to stay together regardless of age, sex or gender.
Lydia’s Place is a tax-exempt 501c3 nonprofit organization. Under the direction of Nikki Hawks, and with the support of community partners and its board members, Lydia’s Place is currently raising funds for site renovations and improvements. Upon completion, the shelter will meet Housing and Urban Development (HUD) compliance standards and expects to serve around 50 people at capacity.
The Francis Street site most recently served as a church and is currently owned by First United Methodist Church of Asheboro. The church has generously agreed to lease the property to Lydia’s Place for $1 per year. Site renovation and organizational plans include preserving the existing church’s multi-functional spaces to provide temporary shelter, a confidential environment, community resources, warm meals and overall support for clients.
