The concept of offering our “First Fruits” to the Lord goes back to the Exodus. After God redeemed the Hebrew people, Moses shared The Law from God. In it, God instructs the people “to bring the choice first fruits of your soil into the house of the LORD your God” (Exodus 32:19).
The purpose of the offering was two-fold. First it supported the worshipping community. This was incredibly important because worship shaped and supported the faith of the people. They held it in high esteem and supported it appropriately. Second, it served as a spiritual discipline. When the harvest came in, the people would set aside their gift to God first. They did this before they sold or used any of their crops. This discipline served as a reminder of what was really important in life. It proclaimed that God was their first priority and they humbly realized that all they had and all they were flowed from God’s generous hands.
As we get “back to basics” this October, this concept reminds us all how much we too need worship and our church family. We also remember how important the mission and witness of our congregation is to our community.
Soon, you will be receiving a stewardship packet from our Stewardship Team. We hope you will review the materials and prayerfully discern how you and your family will “seek first the Kingdom of God.”
